Muchos mangos

Since today was my last day of school, we didn't do too much studying. After the chocolate tree field trip, my teacher and I picked fresh green mangos from the school's mango tree.

Here's my teacher Carmen. (New week, new teacher). She's 18 and going to college in September, hopefully. No SATs; instead she has to take an entrance exam and send those results along with her application to the university in Santa Rosa. It's a lot harder to go to college here. Financially, it's out of reach for most, and there are a lot more students who apply than there are spots available. Also, lots of Hondurans are lucky just to go to high school. Carmen had to live in another city because there isn't a decent high school in Copan. Paying to live away from home for high school makes it even harder to pay for college. Carmen told me she's nervous about the entrance exam, and she's working at Ixbalanque to save money for school.

Here's the mango tree. We leaned out of this second story balcony and hit the tree with a big stick, in Carmen's words, "Like a pinata," to get the mangos to fall off.

  1. Do you know that Lillian is obsessed with mangos? She loves them.
