Details

I was planning on spending this afternoon updating the blog with Las Mercedes photos and text. Change of plans.

Yesterday the Chorti (indigenous people, descendants of the Maya) took over the Ruins outside of Copan. They're occupying them now, which means the tourist site is shut down. I'm not sure why exactly they're protesting this time, but in the past it has been over the government not sharing the profits from the Ruins' tourism with the Chorti.

Tonight, the government is planning on kicking the Chorti. It could get violent, and the road leading out of Copan might be blocked. Since the Duke group is supposed to be leaving early tomorrow morning, we're moving right now to a hotel outside of town so we won't get stuck.

Exciting times in Copan. I'll try and take pictures when we drive by the Ruins on our way to the new hotel (which will hopefully have wifi).
